When Deepa first came to us at eight years old, she had already lived a tough life. Her father, who lived with schizophrenia, wandered the streets and eventually disappeared. Her mother was involved in the sex industry and unwilling to care for her. Deepa and her brother were raised by their elderly grandparents, who loved them but rarely had enough food to offer. Many days, the children ate only what neighbors could spare.
When Deepa arrived at our children’s home, the effects of long-term hunger were painfully clear. For weeks, she ate until she became sick — not out of excess, but because she had never known what it meant to feel full. Slowly, with consistent meals and gentle guidance, she learned what it felt like to be safe, nourished, and cared for.
Deepa began school for the first time at age eight, yet her intelligence quickly became clear—she often skipped grades and excelled academically. We had the joy of watching her work hard, grow into a responsible young woman, and generously help others along the way.
Today, Deepa is nineteen and thriving. She now lives independently with several roommates and is finishing her senior year at an exceptional school. Thanks to the sponsorship program that continues to support her education, we’ve been able to employ her as a tutor.
Deepa was recently elected the leader of her school “house,” representing onequarter of the student body. She is now a strong candidate to become the student leader of the entire school — an honor in India reserved for students who are respected, responsible, and hardworking. With her sights set on college, Deepa is eager to continue her education and pursue her dreams. We will continue walking alongside her, providing the support she needs to build a bright and hopeful future.
